I hope these recommendations are more helpful than what you&#8217;ve come across before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of my life, I\u2019ve struggled with negative thoughts. These thoughts have come up around work, relationships, and my health. I\u2019ve tried stopping negative thoughts from entering my mind. But stopping negative thoughts hasn\u2019t worked for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, I learned how to reframe the stories I told myself. To do this, I found support through therapy, books, and long conversations with friends. These reframing strategies improved my mental health and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/choosing-happiness-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happiness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, I\u2019ll review some of the tools and actions that have helped me identify and overcome negative thoughts. For example, negative thoughts have impacted my:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental and physical health<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">thought processes<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and ability to finish creative projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arlin Cuncic, a writer with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/how-to-change-negative-thinking-3024843\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verywell Mind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, defines negative thoughts as, &#8220;negative beliefs you might have about yourself, situations, or others. They can affect your mood and can be present in certain mental health conditions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are examples of negative thoughts that I\u2019ve struggled with in the past:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My writing will never be good enough.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My clients will think I&#8217;m stupid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My business is destined to fail.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These types of negative thoughts still pop into my mind. Below you\u2019ll find 13 tips I use to cope with negative thought patterns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re struggling with negative thoughts, pick a few tips that you can use in your daily life. Some of the tips might not interest you, and that\u2019s okay!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #1: Therapy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, I\u2019ve seen numerous therapists. They have helped me by listening to my stories. They\u2019ve also recommended tools like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/the-benefits-of-journaling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journaling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and meditation; I use both daily. Following their advice has helped me reframe negative thought patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re thinking about seeing a therapist, do some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/therapy\/how-find-therapist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A good starting point is to ask a trusted friend or your doctor for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/locator.apa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referral<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #2: Journaling<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many benefits to starting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/the-benefits-of-journaling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journaling practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Journaling is a key part of my daily routine. I also use journaling prompts throughout the day; especially when I struggle with negative thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, when I wrote this article, I struggled with negative thoughts. So, I stopped writing the article, opened my journal, and responded to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thework.com\/instruction-the-work-byron-katie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byron Katie\u2019s Four Questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katie\u2019s prompts include:\u00a0<\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it true?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you absolutely know that it\u2019s true?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who would you be without that thought?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thework.com\/instruction-the-work-byron-katie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Katie\u2019s work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #3: Be Kind to Yourself<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was in my early twenties, the idea of \u201cbeing kind to myself\u201d seemed cheesy and unhelpful. I was wrong. When I struggle, I pause, take note, and write about what\u2019s happening. Also, I ask myself: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would you tell your best friend?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a good friend is struggling with a problem, I try to listen and offer encouraging words or resources. I do that with myself, too! It sounds cheesy, but the practice has made my life so much better. I am worth being kind to and doing so helps me to recover from negative thoughts more easily and enjoy my life more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #4: Go on a \u201cNoticing Workout\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, I discovered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TXWGctXdl_I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Keaggy\u2019s TEDTalk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s about finding \u201cattention, mindfulness, and creativity in the ordinary.\u201d In his talk, Keaggy mentions an activity called the &#8220;30-minute noticing workout.&#8221; The workout involves walking, paying attention, and taking photos. I love this activity! It&#8217;s amazing how moving my body, and turning my attention outward through photography, can reduce the negative chatter in my mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #5: Write Gratitude Lists<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing gratitude lists is another way that I reframe negative thoughts. This isn\u2019t about denying negative emotions. It&#8217;s important to notice and acknowledge hard experiences and feelings. It\u2019s equally important to record the good things in my life; especially when I\u2019m having a tough day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #6: Meditate<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meditating helps me rest. It&#8217;s also an opportunity to notice the thoughts that come up. When I meditate, the thoughts can be positive or negative. I&#8217;ve learned to simply notice the thoughts that arise; especially the negative thoughts. It\u2019s helped me realize that thinking a thought doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s true.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #7: Volunteer<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m in the process of going through a training program to volunteer at our local hospital. I&#8217;m excited about the opportunity because volunteering is a way to give back to my community. It&#8217;s also a way to help myself. When I\u2019m helping others, I don&#8217;t have time to focus on negative thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #8: Make a Friend Date<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tending to my relationships is the key to living a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/choosing-happiness-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and healthy life. For instance, I go on weekly dates with my friends. Our meet-ups make me happy. Plus, I can lean on my friends when I&#8217;m dealing with negative thought patterns. They listen, and usually offer advice or tips that are helpful. Friends will share their struggles with me, too. In turn, I can listen and offer advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I prioritize my long-distance friendships too by scheduling regular phone calls, sending care packages and postcards and remembering that there are people on my side all over the world.<\/p>\n<h3>Tip #9: Work on a Creative Project<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a list of hobbies and projects that I&#8217;m working on in my journal. When I&#8217;m stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, I open my journal and look at this list. This helps me shift my attention toward creativity, instead of negative thoughts. It\u2019s a good reminder that my creative projects are fun, and offer me the opportunity to learn, explore, and grow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #10: Laugh and Learn<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few days ago, my writing felt stale and my negative thoughts were getting the best of me. So, I turned on my favorite podcast, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maintenancephase.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenance Phase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and went for a walk. The podcast hosts debunk serious subjects, and they are funny. Learning and laughing helped me break a cycle of rumination, and get back to writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #11: Have a Snack<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being immersed in a project is fun. I love being in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_flow_the_secret_to_happiness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state of flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! However, it can be a problem because I forget to eat. If I don&#8217;t eat, I get hungry. And for me, being overly hungry can lead to negative thinking. I\u2019ve learned the hard way to build snack breaks into my work routine. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/minimalistbaker.com\/healthier-peanut-butter-chocolate-chip-cookies-gf-1-bowl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cookies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are my favorite food to nibble on. A hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows on top will work, too. If I don\u2019t have a sweet on hand, a colorful fruit also seems to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #12: Move Your Body<\/h3>\n<p>You can move your body anytime but it&#8217;s especially powerful when you are experiencing symptoms from your negative thoughts. When it comes to overcoming negative thinking it&#8217;s more about acceptance to prevent worries or spirals. Try yoga, walking or other physical exercise. It can serve as a distraction by removing you (at least short term) from your negative thoughts. Physical movement can impact stress hormones like cortisol, endorphins and emotional reasoning.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/exercising-to-relax#:~:text=Exercise%20reduces%20levels%20of%20the,natural%20painkillers%20and%20mood%20elevators.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a> from Harvard Medical School, &#8220;Exercise reduces levels of the body&#8217;s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body&#8217;s natural painkillers and mood elevators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Tip #13: Assess Your Sleep Patterns<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I don&#8217;t get enough sleep, I&#8217;m grouchy, anxious, and prone to feeling sad. So, I follow a firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/matt_walker_how_sleep_affects_your_emotions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I go to bed around 8.30pm and wake up at 6am; sometimes earlier. This works for my personality and work routine. Also, a few hours before bed, I put my smartphone to bed. Reading a book helps me unwind and sleep better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tip #14: Quit Social Media<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About three years ago, I quit using social media. I don&#8217;t regret my decision. Not using social media has helped me <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/how-to-slow-down-in-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it\u2019s improved my mental health.
