When my husband\u2013Logan\u2013suggested that we simplify our lives, I opposed the idea. I felt scared to make such a big change, and I didn\u2019t think my parents or peers would support the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a lot of conversations with Logan, I began to recognize the <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/benefits-of-simple-living\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits of simple living<\/a>. I realized that decluttering my things \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/simple-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finances<\/a> \u2013 would give me freedom. Also, Logan argued that living simply would bring more joy into our lives (he was correct).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-124494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/how-to-declutter-things.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we started to declutter things, I felt excited and nervous. For example, I had concerns, like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What if I regret giving away my stuff?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if my circumstances change and I need my things?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if I miss my belongings?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if I don\u2019t like living in a small apartment with all my stuff?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if I need something just in case?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you can relate to these questions?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out, my fears weren\u2019t justified. I don\u2019t regret giving away my stuff, and I don\u2019t miss my things. And, all the \u201cjust in case\u201d scenarios never came to fruition. As I let go of more and more things, I discovered that owning less actually made me <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/choosing-happiness-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">happier<\/a>. Decluttering my things has given me the freedom to:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>spend time with loved ones,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulandwit.com\/home\/episode160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hobbies<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>savor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulandwit.com\/home\/episode164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">simple pleasures<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>focus on my values,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Declutter-Things.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Declutter-Things-512x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-124495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Declutter-Things-512x1024.jpg 512w, https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Declutter-Things-150x300.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Declutter-Things.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 regret-free ways to declutter your things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you\u2019ll find 7 strategies that helped me mitigate my decluttering fears. I hope these ideas help you declutter your things too!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-start-small-when-you-declutter-things\"><strong>1.) Start small&nbsp;<\/strong>when you declutter things.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start small, and take your time. Decluttering isn\u2019t a race. You can begin with a small bookshelf, junk drawer, or one section of your <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/goodcloset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closet<\/a>. For example, starting small helped me build momentum, confidence, and encouraged me to let go of my fears.&nbsp;These <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/decluttering-101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 decluttering rules<\/a> will help too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.) Take pictures<\/strong> of your things.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking photos of objects helped me \u2013 and friends \u2013 let go of belongings I no longer use. For example, a friend didn\u2019t want to keep her doll collection, so she took photos of the dolls and gave them to a neighbor with a young daughter that loved the dolls. My friend occasionally looks through her old photos. However, she is happy the dolls have a new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, taking <a href=\"https:\/\/ladydecluttered.com\/11-realistic-before-and-after-decluttering-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photos<\/a> of your things is an excellent way to document your decluttering progress. It\u2019s fun to look back on before, after, and in-between shots. And, new phone cameras have a feature that allows you to scan photos in a three dimensional space. This is a fun way to capture photos of objects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.) Try a 30-day experiment<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent article \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/clutter-making-you-sick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How Clutter Makes You Sick And Stressed<\/a>\u201d \u2013 Courtney said, \u201cIf letting go makes you feel stressed, be gentle with yourself and hide the things you want to release. You can simply box the things up you are unsure about and hide it for 30-60 days. If you don\u2019t miss it or like me, forget what\u2019s in the box all together, it\u2019s easier to let go.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I recently put my old journals in a box. Then, I hid the box in my closet. I might shred some of my old notebooks, and I might keep others. First, I want to see if I actually miss my old journals. You can do this with clothing, tools, kitchenware, and more. Hiding your stuff can be a fun experiment when you declutter your things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also try boxing up all of your duplicate items and only using your favorite pen, wooden spoon, or coffee cup for 30 or 60 days. You can turn this into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theminimalists.com\/game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a fun game<\/a>, too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.) Donate books<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, so giving up my personal <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/places-to-donate-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">library of books<\/a> was difficult. I don\u2019t regret giving away my books, though. Over 15 years ago, my husband and I donated the majority of our books to the library. We enjoy sharing books with our community and friends. If I want to reread or reference a book again, I can borrow it from the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5.) Try Swedish Death Cleaning.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While Swedish Death Cleaning may sound like some kind of morbid crime scene cleanup, it\u2019s actually a thoughtful and effective approach to decluttering,&#8221; said writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespruce.com\/swedish-death-cleaning-4801461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ashley Knierim<\/a>. She went on to explain that this method of decluttering and organizing can \u201clessen the burden of your loved ones after you&#8217;ve passed.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After I die, I don\u2019t want my loved ones sorting through lots of my stuff or clutter. Keeping this in mind helps me let go of things I no longer use. Declutter things so other people don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6.) Consider usefulness and sentimentality.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I give something away, I consider its usefulness and emotional value. Generally, I give things away that I don\u2019t use regularly. If something holds a lot of sentimental value, I\u2019ll wait for 30 or 60 days before I donate it or keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, as I\u2019ve grown older, I\u2019ve become less and less attached to my belongings. I no longer value most objects beyond their utility. What brings me true joy are experiences and spending time with loved ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7.) Practice gratitude&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decluttering helped us create a cozy <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/simplify-your-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimalist home<\/a>, and I\u2019m grateful for our space. Focusing on gratitude is one way we\u2019ve been able to let go of extra stuff without regret.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, decluttering isn\u2019t a race.
