Because you&#8217;ve invested time, money and energy in your craft or hobby, it&#8217;s hard to see the supplies as clutter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/craft-and-hobby-clutter.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-127917\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: This article on decluttering craft and hobby clutter is written by contributing writer, Tammy Strobel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly ten years ago, knitting was my favorite hobby. At the time, we lived in Portland, OR in a very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldlibrary.com\/Activism\/YOU-CAN-BUY-HAPPINESS-AND-ITS-CHEAP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tiny house<\/a>. The local yarn store became a favorite place because I loved looking at colorful yarns and needles. It would have been easy for me to acquire way too much yarn (and beautiful needles). However, living in a tiny house meant that I didn\u2019t have a lot of space to stockpile knitting supplies; that was a good thing. I didn&#8217;t want to deal with decluttering craft and hobby clutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favorite parts of knitting was connecting with friends. For example, I biked to a local shop each week and spent a few hours knitting with a fellow group of makers. It was such a fun time! I learned to knit hats, scarves, baby blankets, and I even made a large blanket for a standard sized bed.&nbsp;After I finished making my big blanket, I decided to take a tiny break from knitting. My short break turned into 6 months. Since I wasn\u2019t actively engaged in knitting, I decided to give my knitting supplies to a friend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>Letting go of old hobbies \u2013 and the stuff that\u2019s paired with each craft or hobby \u2013 is a freeing process. For instance, letting go of knitting gave me the opportunity to declutter my little house and explore new interests like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecycling.org\/blog\/top-10-bicycle-camping-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bike camping<\/a>.\u00a0Below are tips that have helped me let go of hobby clutter. I hope they help you, too!<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-decluttering-craft-and-hobby-clutter\">Decluttering craft and hobby clutter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-journal-about-your-hobbies-nbsp\">1. Journal about your hobbies&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/the-benefits-of-journaling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journaling<\/a> about your hobbies can serve as a powerful tool for letting go. Here are some effective writing prompts that have helped me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why do you want to release this hobby?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you want to create space to start something new, or will this help you simplify your life?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do you want to learn through this process?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-get-your-hobbies-out-into-the-open-nbsp\">2. Get your hobbies out into the open&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather your hobby supplies and put them into one location like on your bed or the living room floor. Then assess your stuff. As you sort through your hobbies, consider these questions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do these hobbies \u2013 and the stuff associated with them \u2013 bring value to your life?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When was the last time you used your hobby supplies?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does your hobby still align with your interests and values?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your journal handy so that you can take notes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-sort-hobby-stuff-into-categories\">3. Sort hobby stuff into categories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have everything out in the open, it\u2019s time to start sorting your hobby clutter. Put your hobby stuff into piles like keep, donate, sell, or discard. Categorizing your stuff will help make the process manageable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, find a home for the things you want to keep. Then you can put other hobby stuff into bags and boxes to be donated, sold, or discarded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-use-the-konmari-method\">4. Use the KonMari method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t decide what to keep, try the <a href=\"https:\/\/konmari.com\/what-is-konmari-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KonMari Method<\/a>. Marie Kondo encourages folks to only keep items that \u201cspark joy.\u201d She <a href=\"https:\/\/konmari.com\/what-is-konmari-method\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>, \u201cTidying is about looking forward, so devote your energy into choosing objects that spark joy for you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cPick up each item one at a time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask yourself if it sparks joy \u2013 you should feel a little thrill, as if the cells in your body are slowly rising.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it does, keep it!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it doesn\u2019t, let it go with gratitude.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I love this method because it\u2019s so simple!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-donate-your-craft-and-hobby-clutter-to-a-good-cause\">5. Donate your craft and hobby clutter to a good cause\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Francine Jay, author of <em>The Joy of Less<\/em> and <em>Lightly<\/em>, writes about how it\u2019s easier to donate one\u2019s stuff when it goes to a good cause. \u201cSomething that\u2019s been sitting in your house, unused and unloved, may bring a great deal of joy to, or fill the genuine need of, someone else. Make their day, and give yourself a pat on the back. Knowing that you\u2019re doing good can make it much easier to part with your stuff,\u201d says Jay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She inspired us to create <a href=\"https:\/\/bemorewithless.com\/where-to-donate-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Where To Donate Stuff: The Ultimate Guide<\/em><\/a>. I hope the guide will encourage you to donate your hobby stuff to a good cause. It\u2019s also a helpful resource for folks who are interested in donating stuff but may not know where to start.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-do-a-hobby-swap-with-friends-nbsp\">6. Do a hobby swap with friends&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not propose a hobby swap to a friend? Your craft and hobby clutter may be a welcome addition for a friend. For instance, you can share your unused hobby supplies, like yarn and knitting needles, an old watercolor set, or a collection of puzzles with a friend. In return, your friend can reciprocate by offering their own neglected supplies. It&#8217;s a fantastic way to breathe new life into old hobbies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-create-a-designated-space-for-your-hobby-stuff\">7. Create a designated space for your hobby stuff<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite part of this process is setting up a specific home for my hobby stuff. For example, I have a small box in my closet that is dedicated to my hobbies (like letter writing and art journaling). The box is placed in a location that I see frequently, and it\u2019s easily accessible. Keep this in mind as you organize your hobby stuff. If you can see your stuff, you\u2019re more likely to use it daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bonus-tip-do-the-thing-you-most-want-to-do-nbsp\">Bonus Tip: \u201cDo the thing you most want to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Author Elizabeth Gilbert said, \u201cYou have to stop doing things you want to do so you can do the thing you most want to do.\u201d This idea can be applied to many areas of life, like hobbies.
