How To Simplify Anything
Inspired by this article, How to Do Anything, I bring you How To Simplify Anything. Each section covers a different part of life that you may want to simplify. Consider your time and energy when you are simplifying so that you can maintain a consistent pace. Consistency is more important than intensity when it comes to making progress. It took me at least three years to declutter my home, become debt-free and to consider a simpler way to work. Because I took it slowly, I was able to simplify without a lot of extra stress. Here we go!
How to simplify your SPACE
- Your wardrobe
- All that extra stuff
- Paper clutter
- Your books
- Your closet
- Donations
- Your home
- Sentimental items
- Your decluttering routine
- When you struggle to declutter
When you struggle to let go of stuff, remember that holding on is harder. You have to hold on to it every day but you only have to let go of it once. You hold on to stuff with your time, money, attention and emotion. When you let go, you free up those resources for something else. For a long time, I held on to stuff thinking, “it’s not hurting anything” and when I realized it wasn’t helping anything either, I let go. It has to help, or add value, or make me smile … or it’s gone.
How to simplify your TIME
- Things that steal your time and hold you back
- How you spend your time
- The go-go-go pace of life
- Procrastination
- The pressure of productivity culture
- Your mornings
- Finding more time
To protect my time, I continue to edit things out of my life that I used to spend time on. When I wish I had more time for something, I take a close look at what exactly I’m spending my time doing. Is it stuff I really care about or have to do at all? Or, am I on auto-pilot and not paying attention to how I’m spending time? I used to ignore these questions but now I understand how important they are. Think about how you spend your time and how you’d rather spend your time. Be thoughtful about your minutes and moments so you can slow down and give more attention to what matters to you.
How to simplify your HEALTH
- Your reactions
- The way you feel
- Stress
- Your worries
- The mind-body connection
- Self-care
- Relationships with people who bother you
- Regret
- Your relationship with alcohol
- Sleep
When we reduce commitments and obligations, and eliminate common stressors like debt, crappy jobs, and hurtful relationships, we have time to take better care of our heart and soul. There is time for a nap or journaling and being creative, and space for meditation or a simple gratitude practice. Different people need different things to support their physical and mental health so consider what might work best for you. Better health always simplifies things.
DIGITAL simplicity starts here
- Your email and inbox
- Your digital life
- Sharing on the internet
- Time you spend on your phone
- Digital detox
You could be losing meaningful minutes and moments to your screens and it’s time to get them back. Our phones and devices can connect us to some really good stuff. After all, they probably helped us meet! That said, with a more mindful approach we can harness the power of our digital connections while reducing or eliminating some of the digital connection side effects like tired eyes, lack of focus, too much sitting, apathy and more. These articles will help you think about how social media, constantly checking email and screen time actually impact our creativity, productivity, health and wellness.
Decluttering your FINANCES.
Simplifying my relationship with money relieved so much stress for me. It took time but I’ll never regret paying off decades of debt, changing my shopping habits and thinking about what made me happy and what did not.
Simplifying other LIFE things.
We can look at almost everything through the lens of simplicity, not to create a simple life but to create a life. Remove the things that remove you from your life, the things that weigh you down and the things you really don’t want to give anymore attention to. Leave things like hurry, judgment, comparison and perfection behind and enjoy your simplicity journey.
- Packing for a trip
- When you come home from a trip
- Relationship mistakes
- Conversations about simplifying
- The holidays
- Apologizing
- Fear of uncertainty
- Stress
- Happiness
Declutter your space, streamline your schedule, and reduce your possessions. This can include getting rid of anything that you don’t need, use, or love, eliminating non-essential commitments, and letting go of possessions that no longer serve a purpose. By doing this, you will have less to clean and maintain, and more time and energy to focus on the things that truly matter. Take it slowly, focusing on one area at a time. Big change takes hundreds of tiny steps and they all count.
